For just over four weeks photographer Pia Johnson will be undertaking an artist residency at ANAM from mid September to mid October 2012. This is the first time that ANAM has invited a visual artist to share the space and see what happens from the inside.
Hoping to witness the moments of concentration, learning, joy and frustration, Pia will photograph the daily activities at ANAM, capturing students, faculty, guest artists, staff and audience members. Pia hopes to delve behind the scenes and produce a new series of photographs that explore and inform the heart of music and performance education.
“Bringing together two loves – music and photography – I am very excited to have the opportunity to become part of ANAM for an artistic residency,” Pia says. “There is a wonderful advantage of spending a length of time in a place. You become part of the walls where people forget about you and the camera, and it is when this happens that you can catch those rare moments where everything is immediate and real.”
